Periodontal Surgery Is Required When Dental Patients Have Deep Pockets

Periodontal treatments depends upon the type and severity of the disease. The first step is usually a thorough cleaning involving scaling to get rid of plaque and calculus deposits under the gum line. When the pockets are deeper and over 4 to 6 mm, periodontal surgery may be required. Infection and bone destruction can occur if the pockets are allowed to remain. Flap surgery may be necessary to allow the dentist to get access to the roots of the teeth in order to thoroughly remove calculus, plaque and any diseased tissue when the pockets are deep and bone has been destroyed.
